Traditional alarm companies purchase equipment from manufacturers that have been producing alarm equipment for decades. Their equipment is listed by national recognized testing laboratory (like UL, ETL, or FM Global) and is used by hundreds of other alarm companies. If you become unsatisfied with our service, you can use another alarm company to begin monitoring, servicing, and maintaining the equipment you have purchased from us.  Likewise, if you have purchased a non-proprietary system from another alarm company, we can take over that system’s monitoring, service, and maintenance.
If you chose to lease / purchase a system from a communication provider or DIY company, it is likely that no other company is able to take over that system. You have essentially tied yourself to a company that has been in the alarm industry for only a couple of years (their license number is a pretty sure way to find out how long they have been providing security services) and treats many of their customers like they treat a cell phone customer or cable television customer.
