The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has named October 8 – 14 as Fire Prevention Week.

About 2,500 people die from fires each year, and 74% of those deaths happen at home.  Smoke detectors are the fastest responding detection device to most home fires.  Make sure you have working smoke detectors or smoke alarms in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and at least one on each full level of your home.

If you have smoke detectors, you are now required to have a qualified technician test them every three years.   If you have smoke alarms, test them often and replace the batteries at every time change.

For this year’s Fire Prevention Week, NFPA is concentrating on cooking fires.  Kitchens are NOT good places for smoke detectors, but heat detectors will detect fires without nuisance alarms due to excess smoke.  They will trip before the fire spreads to other rooms in the home.
