The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 72 requires an annual inspection of every fire alarm system, including residential. Some components will require an inspection or test more frequently.

This inspection must be done by a person qualified to do the work.

NFPA 72 also puts the responsibility of making sure this requirement is met on the owner of the building.
