Business phones have changed over the last 50 years!

When alarm systems began using phone lines in the 1960s, the fastest phone lines could communicate data was 1,200 baud.  In the late 1990s, the heyday of dialup internet, they could communicate at 56,000 baud.  These were the days phone lines still used POTS (Plain Ol Telephone Service) and communicated over copper wire.

Business phones today use Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunks, T1s and T3s, and PRIs.   Alarm systems were never engineered to communicate over these technologies.   Even if a business still has copper pairs, the communication path will go through analog to digital and back to analog conversions, so the reliability is greatly diminished as phone service providers are converting their networks from voice to data communications.

If your business’ alarm system still communicates over a phone line, we would love to speak with you about upgrading its communication path.   The best alarm systems have multiple pathways to the central station, like cell and network.   In addition to being more reliable, this may allow you to use a smart phone app to arm and disarm your system, change thermostat controls, lock and unlock doors, and save you money.
