Surveillance systems typically help the system owner in two ways:
1 – It helps identify those stealing from the owner
2 – It helps protect the owner in the event of an accident, like a slip and fall
In each case, the images may have to be used in a court case, criminal in the first example, civil in the second. Existing law will determine if the audio and video may be used to help the owner of the system.
If your surveillance system is DIY (Do It Yourself) or installed by an out-of-state company, there is a good chance you will NOT be able to use it to protect yourself in a court of law because the installer was unfamiliar with local surveillance laws.
