1959 was a remarkable year!
- Alaska (January 3) and Hawaii (August 21) are admitted as states.
- Walt Disney releases its 16th animated film, Sleeping Beauty.
- On February 3, a chartered plane carrying musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper crashes in foggy conditions near Clear Lake, Iowa, killing all aboard. Don McLean sang about the tragedy in his hit “The Day the Music Died.”
- NASA announces its selection of the “Mercury Seven,” the first US astronauts.
- Rod Serling’s “The Twilight Zone” premiers on CBS.
- Guard Tronic begins installing and servicing electronic security systems in Fort Smith and Van Buren under the name Twin City Patrol. The name was changed later that year.
