Testing your alarm system

Testing your alarm system is one of the most important things you can do.  There is no reason to have a security system if it isn’t going to work when it is needed most.   Guard Tronic can provide tools to help, such as sending test timers to the central station, but it is YOU that is using the system on a daily basis.  The system needs to work for you.

Before you test your system, you should call us to place your system into test, so no authorities are notified.   Have your account number and password/code ready and call:  (800) 687-0668 to place your system into test.

Fire Alarm Systems

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) give the responsibility of testing a fire alarm system to the owner.

NFPA 72 Chapter 14.2.3.1* The property or building or system owner or the owner’s designated  representative shall be responsible for inspection, testing, and maintenance of the system and for alterations or additions to this system.

For residences, it also says:

NFPA 72 Chapter 14.4.6.1 Testing. Household fire alarm systems shall be tested by a qualified service technician at least annually according to the methods of Table 14.4.3.2.

If there is ever a loss, inspection, testing, and maintenance records are one of the first documents that insurance companies will want to see.   It will be very helpful to show that you have complied with current fire codes and standards.

How often devices are tested depends on what devices are installed, but most require an annual test.   Single and multiple station smoke alarms, like those installed by electricians, should be tested more often as NFPA says they are less reliable.   Smoke detectors are tested in different ways.  Some will require a magnet be places near the head of the unit.  Some will have a push-to-test button.  Some will need canned smoke sprayed into the detector.  Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to test these, and all fire detection devices.

Burglary and Robbery Systems

Most instruction manuals require weekly tests of burglary and robbery alarm systems.  You can find out how often your system requires testing by visiting our manuals page.

Our contract states the user will test the system prior to arming the security system, as well as a weekly test of the full system.

To test the system

After calling and placing the system in test, arm your security system as normal.  After the expiration of the delay time, wait an additional 60 seconds, then open all of your doors and walk in front of all of your motion detectors.   Follow the instructions given during the installation to test your glass break detectors, window screens, and other security devices.

Ensure that the siren sounds for at least 60 seconds.   You can then disarm your system and either call the central station to verify signals, check via the app or web browser.

Guard Tronic offers periodic inspections and would love to discuss testing your system with you.
